For Immediate Release:

Saturday night at Evergreen Speedway was an action packed show with full fields of cars. The Figure 8 nationals had 27 cars time in and take the green Flag. The Speedway Chevrolet Super Late Models had 13 cars time in for qualifying. The number 16 car, driven by Daniel Moore and sponsored by Work’n More and Wolverine Boots and Apparel, was in the number one spot with a 17.343. Daniel has shown the last few weeks he is going to be strong down the stretch to the end of the season. 19 Les Schwab Tire Street stocks were on hand, setting up what would be an exciting main event. Points leaders Darrel Lutovsky and Frank Cowgill coming in the event tied had a lot on the line. In the Foster Press Mini Stocks there were a dozen cars running for the trophy.

Cowgill and Lutovsky were separated by one point after the heat race events with Cowgill taking 2nd and Lutovsky 3rd in their heats.  When the green flag flew for the Street Stock Main event, the action was fast and furious. Numerous caution flags and a lot of damage to many of the cars made for some hot tempers. During a caution flag, brought out by a front stretch incident that involved no less the defending champion, Lane Sundholm, the 66 car of Ryan Hansen, the 15 car of Dave Stewart Jr., and points front runner Darrel Lutovsky. The put crews of the 48 team of Tom Hughs, the 31 of Jason Fraser, the 00 of Naima Lang and the 2 of Michael Fritz which pit near Sundholm all chipped in hands and expertise, getting Sundholm back on the track without losing a lap after the crash. Returning to the track, Sundholm  had a lot of spots to make back up to get to the front. Sundholm did everything he needed to do for the win. In  victory lane, the 00 car was a mess, missing the entire nose of the car. No one was more surprised with the win then Sundholm, crediting all the people that helped to get him back on the track. Points front runner Frank Cowgill, who also lost a radiator during the race, finished one lap down in 9th with Lutovsky down 4 laps in 16th.

In the Foster Press Mini Stock division, the battle came right down to the finish. Early leader Michael Fritz had former champion Scott LaCross behind him. With the caution coming out, LaCross opted for the outside lane on the restart since Fritz was doing a terrific job of holding the low groove. After making the pass on the outside the caution flew again. Points leader, Kris Harriss, tucked in on the back bumper of LaCross and made the pass under Fritz, who went to the outside on the restart. The finish was LaCross with Harriss 3 tenths of a second back then Fritz.

It was double header night for the Speedway Chevrolet Super Late Models. The first race was sponsored by PEMCO and with that came the PEMCO Roadside Chain Saw Carver’s trophy, a coveted handmade (via a chainsaw) trophy which many of the drivers wanted. Naima Lang, celebrating his 40th birthday, brought home the win. The second main was won by Jason Fraser.

The Pawn X-change Super Figure 8’s had an action packed race. Scheduled for 100 laps, the race was cut short when due to many cautions and red flags ran them up to the track curfew. Many drivers turned out for this big event. Former champions on hand, Steve Cox, Steve Peters who have been running only select races this season, along with the return of Pat Clark made for an exciting race. At the finish there were only 3 cars on the lead lap. The win going to Brian Gunderson, 2nd was Troy Siminer and 3rd, another former champion and winner from a couple of weeks ago, Glen Davis. New track record holder Ricky Deitz finished one spot behind defending champion, John Carlson in 9th.

Saturday August 22nd Re-cap

Saturday night, August 22nd, was Fan Appreciation Night At Evergreen Speedway. Vern Foster of Foster press brought a lot to the table for the event. Title sponsor to the mini stock division, Foster press provided new tires to the winner and a random drawn finisher.
Maltby Food Bank had a food drive and hosted the 50/50 raffle. Karl and Vera from the food bank did an incredible job taking donations for their worthy cause.

The racing started off with not one but two new track records. First up to take over the new number spot was Ricky Deitz. Ricky ripped off a lap that didn’t look fast but was very smooth. The time was 16.88seconds. Next up, setting a new stinger 8 track record was Josh Young.

Heats races had a lot of action a great racing. First up was the Foster Press Mini Stocks. Early front runner and always  a hard charger Scott LaCross appeared to have a car that didn’t want to turn well and could only hold on to finish in the 3rd spot. Nat Barber won the heat race, last week’s main event winner and points leader Kris Harriss finished 2nd. In the first of two heat races for the Les Schwab Tire Street Stocks, early contact between the 99 car of Joe Kneeland and the 15 of Dave Stewart Jr. required both cars to be assisted off the track via the tow trucks. Stewart would repair his broken axel in time for the main event. Extensive front end damage to the 99 kept him from making it out for the main event. In the end it was Lane Sundholm with the win and “Young and Good Looking” Darrel Lutovsky taking 2nd. The 2nd heat race for the street stocks saw a great battle between Jim Foti,  Frank Cowgill, Tim Widener and  Casey Branch. Jim Foti drove like he was on a mission from the drop of the green and shot out to the point with the other three mixing it up behind changing positions often. At the stripe it was Jim Foti. In the late models Jeff Knight won the heat race with Naima Lang in 2nd. Natalie Sather and Daniel Moore tangled on the back stretch. Both cars did make the repairs needed to make it back out for the main event. In the first of the stinger 8 figure 8’s heat race. Joselyn LaFleur was in the lead but at the first turn she got turned around. The officials decided that it was Jim Puntenney that turned her around and threw the black flag. Rob Dykstra took the win and JJ Edwards finished 2nd. Super figure 8’s  saw Steve Peters win the first heat and Quentin Boreson won the 2nd in the Tim Gapp owned machine.

The main events started off with the Foster Press Mini Stocks taking the grid. Early on John Roberts jumped out in the lead and drove his machine hard. Lap after lap Roberts ran out front. Kris Harriss was able to get to the back bumper of Roberts with about ten laps to go in the race. Harriss tried high and low to make his way around Roberts. But Roberts made his Mazda about 32 feet wide using every inch of the racetrack. Roberts did a great job to hold off Harriss to take home the win and win the trophy and gift from the sponsor of the event. Michael Fritz, who seemed to be off the pace a bit in the heat race, made a hard charge to finish 3rd.

The stinger 8 main event saw a ton of action in the intersection Jim Puntenney  made it exciting dodging  the leaders. Joselyn LaFleur, early race leader, tried to check up to avoid Puntenney only to be carried through the intersection by the pack behind her. Ben Chandler was the next to take the point. He too had to check up at the intersection which made him relinquish the lead. Previous race winner, Lance O’Grain, was making his way through  the field when contact with his car and then the wall really took away the handling for his machine. O’Grain also had an intersection altercation with Putteney. At the finish it was the Battlewagon number 30 of Steve Peters.

Next up on the grid were the Speedway Chevrolet Super Late Models.  Daniel Moore jumped out to an early lead and seemed as if he was on a rain. The Work and More car, driven by Moore was on a rail. Naima Lang waited and felt out how his car was going to handle before he decided on a line to run. Lang was able to run Moore down and eventually made his way to the lead.  Caution flags also played a part in the race. Early on Jeff Knight, heat race winner, was put into a safer tire going in to turn one on the first lap. Later on Sather and Michael Prudnick also had an incident that brought out another yellow. At the end Lang won the race, Daniel Moore 2nd and Steve Ptacek finished 3rd.

The Pawn X-change Super Figure 8 race was fast and furious.  Side by side action and plenty of near misses in the intersection kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. Taking home the hardware was defending champion John Carlson, 2nd  was new track record holder Ricky Deitz and 3rd went to Shane Sawin.

The Les Schwab Tire Streets stocks, which has a battle going on for the points. Was exciting the entire race.  Early on cars were spinning and tires squealing. Casey Branch jumped out to a huge lead and the race looked to be all his. A late caution bunch the field. Defending champion, Lane Sundholm at that time was able to pull up. On the restart Lane opted to take the outside with the choice at the commitment cone, taking the inside on row 2 was Lutovsky with tour driver, Jason Fraser, on the outside.  A shoot out to the finish allowed Sundholm to take the win, Branch 2nd, Lutovsky taking home 3rd.

Tom Hughs and CarEvergreen State Fair – 2009

“A Passion for Racing”

Story by Larry Henry

Tom Hughs can’t afford to drive crazy.
”He doesn’t go out and wreck his way around the track,” said Evergreen Speedway race director Eric Mehrer.”He’s one of these guys who’s always level-headed.”
 He’s got to be.
”Everything on the car I paid for,” Hughs said.”I can’t go out driving crazy and start wrecking stuff.”
Not that wrecks don’t happen. It’s part of racing, no matter how careful you are.
It happened to him early this season in a race at Evergreen Speedway. After leading most of the way, he got tangled up with another car and finished ninth.
One look at his car told him all he needed to know. “If the insurance guy had walked in, he wouldn’t even have pulled out his note pad,” Hughs said.”He would have said, ‘Total it.’ ”
His first thought: How much is it going to cost to rebuild it?
When you don’t have any sponsorship money and you’re footing your own bills, cost matters.
But rebuild it he did, with the help of driver Jeff Knight and his crew. They had it ready to go the following week _ had there been a race.
That’s life on the small tracks of America. Demolish your car and some guy who was trying to put you into the wall the week before volunteers to come and help put your car back together.
There’s not much money _ if any _ to be made in small-time racing. Even the top drivers are lucky to cover costs, Hughs said.
So why does he do it? It’s not as if he’s filthy rich, though he makes a good living as a laser engraver at the Boeing plant in Renton after years of working as a mechanic at the Everett plant.
He does it for one simple reason. “I just love stock car racing,” the 42-year-old Arlington resident said.
For some drivers, it’s the speed that causes the adrenalin rush. For Hughs, it’s the competition. To be running next to someone on the “edge of control and make it around the track 40 times” is a rush in itself.
Some drivers aspire to run the big-time NASCAR circuit back East. All Hughs ever wanted to do was run the super stocks at Monroe. “This is my big time,” he said with a grin.
And one of the races he looks forward to is run at the Evergreen State Fair on Sept.5. This is his Talladega. “The stands are packed, there’s a lot of excitement, you can feel the energy,” he said.”It’s a popular night. A lot of people who have never been here will come to the fair race.”
Hughs, a native of Oklahoma, got acquainted with Evergreen Speedway as a high school student working on safety crews on Saturday nights. Soon he was racing there, in the mini-stocks, with his eyes longingly focused on the super stocks. “That was my goal.”
Not that he ever thought he would reach that goal. If he could just drive a late model, he mused, that would be the ultimate. “At that time, no way did I think it would happen.”
In the late 80s, after three years in mini-stocks, he quit racing. Went to work at Boeing. Got married.
Fifteen years later, he got back into racing. In a super stock. As a backup driver for Tom Matthews of Lake Stevens.
 Goal attained.
Three years later, he built his own car with help from his friend and ever-reliable mechanic Mike Walker. “If there’s work to do on the car, he’s here to do it,” Hughs said.”Mike loves this.”
As does Hughs. They do most of the work on the car themselves, spending two days a week throughout the year at Matthews’ shop near Lake Stevens. “We enjoy our guy time,” Hughs said.
 Boys and their toys.
Since resuming racing on a regular basis in 2006, Hughs said he has improved his points standing every year. And as of mid-July, when he was interviewed for this story, he was headed for his best season ever. He was showing consistency, with three consecutive top-five performances, and stood fourth in the point standings.
As he notes in his blog, a well-written and informative recounting of the previous week’s action, he has three goals each time he gets in the car: Finish the race, finish on the lead lap and finish in the top 5.
”If you don’t achieve the first one, the next two are out the window,” he writes.”If we achieve all three, we consider the race a success.”
To try and ensure that he does finish, he doesn’t attempt to win the race in the first few laps. None of that crazy driving he talks about. “I don’t need to be in the lead during the race,” he said.”I play it a little more on the safe side, try to take them at the end, like ‘Where did he come from?’ ”
If cars go around him early, he doesn’t panic. “If a guy is beating on my back, I’ll let him around. It doesn’t pay to be banging with someone in the first 20 laps.”
Whatever happens, though, be it spinouts, crashes, drivers getting upset over being punched into the wall, Hughs relishes it all. “I understand it. It’s all part of racing.”
He’s in his element. The place he always wanted to be.
”Every guy has a thing,” he said.”Whether it’s golf, model trains or racing.”
Does this guy and his thing have a core of fans? “I’m told I do. I don’t know who they are. I get a smattering of applause. No roars.”
 Maybe they’ll come fair week.
They say Tom Hughs is a good ambassador for the sport. Signs autographs. Doesn’t come unglued if things don’t go his way.
As race director Mehrer said, “He’s level-headed.”
There’s a lot to be said for that.
