Champions Crowned at Evergreen Speedway

Short track championship night at Evergreen Speedway was one exciting evening. Full fields of cars, good weather and a party atmosphere amongst the drivers and fans.

Starting the evenings main events, the Les Schwab Tire Street Stocks had a “B” main event. 6 cars took to the track looking for 2 transfer spots into the “A” main. AJ Baxter took the checker, Franky Marin finished 2nd Joselyn LaFleur in 3rd. Baxter took the move up to the feature and Marin opted for the trophy instead of the move up.

The Cub Scout Hornets, looking to crown their first champion, had so many cars that 2 main events had to be run. Chris Williamson came into the night with a big point lead, but not insurmountable for Rick Palmer.  Williamson started shotgun on the field and had to make his way past 17 other cars to get to the front. Picking off cars one and two at a time, it didn’t take long for Williamson to get to the front. Cody Koroshes, who led for the first half of the race and at one point had a big lead. A caution flew for a car stalled bunching the field. On the restart Williamson was able to take the lead and didn’t look back. Koroshes finished in 2nd and Jaime Corbett finished in 3rd.  The win secured the championship for Williamson. The 2nd main event also had 18 cars take the green flag. Patrick Heald starting from the back of pack was in a hurry to make his to the front. Nicole Pollard, Billy Williams and John Crowfoot battled and swapped the lead early in the race. While these 3 battled out front, Heald was making his way through the field. At the stripe it has Heald, followed by Williams and Crowfoot.

The Stinger 8 class had an exciting race. 18 cars started the main event and it didn’t take long for the intersection to become a factor. Jim Puntenney, who started on the front row and also make things exciting at the “X”, was the first car to be involved with a big hit in the intersection.  Steve Peters and Lance O’Grain were battling for the number one spot lap after lap. Peters was collected up in an altercation at the middle, dropping him from the lead to well back in the pack. Peters ran hard to move back up to the top of the field but ran out of laps. Seth Funden, the newly crowned champion, quickly and quietly moved his way from his back row starting spot towards the front. At the stripe for the win, O’Grain had almost a half lap lead over Funden, JJ Edwards finished in 3rd.

The Pawn X-change Super figure 8 race was next up on the grid. Steve Peters started on the front row and never looked back. Ricky Deitz, John Carlson and Shane Sawin ran bumper to bumper behind Peters for nearly the entire 50 laps of the main event. Peters never made a bobble or the mistake that these drivers were looking to capitalize on and that is how they would run to the white flag. Coming around the final turn, Carlson had mechanical problems and pulled out the race groove. Sawin jumped on the opportunity to finish on the podium. Although Carlson didn’t win a trophy on this night, he did win the championship.

The finale championship battle of the night was the Les Schwab Tire Street Stock. A very tight point battle, with just 9 points separating the top three. Frank Cowgill with a 6 point lead over Darrel Lutovsky and 9 points over defending champion Lane Sundholm. The 50 lap main event, with a field of very fast cars and many race winners and champions the action was almost immediate. Travis Blackwood, Duane Schoesboek and Naima Lang all former champions in this division came to win some hardware. Sundholm , Cowgill and Lutovsky ran hard to get to the front of the pack. First to do it was Sundholm and when he made his way to the number one spot he checked out on the field. Schoesboek was solidly in 2nd with Doug Davidson in 3rd. The caution flew when Andy Sole and Blackwood made contact on the back stretch. Cars started to hit the brakes to avoid Sole and Blackwood. Cowgill sustained damage to the front of his car during the wreck that happened out in front of him. Making his way to the pits to remove the damaged body pieces, his crew got him back out fast keeping him on the lead lap. The next bit of bad luck came to Lutovsky, making contact with Steve Ptacek sending Lutovsky around and dropping him well back in the field. It took a few restarts to get the cars back to racing, only to have the caution fly again when Dave Stewart Jr. spun coming off of turn 2. With nowhere to go both Lutovsky and Cowgill became involved in the incident. Cowgill’s car sustained enough damage that it had to leave on the tow truck. Lutovsky had sheet metal damage on every side of his car. At the checkered flag it was Sundholm followed by Shoesboek and Davidson. Unofficially Sundholm takes the crown by 4 points over Cowgill and Lutovsky in 3rd 5 points back.

Congratulations to Naima Lang on his second consecutive NASCAR Whelen All American Division 1 Championship!!!!

The Evergreen Speedway Late Model season did not end as we had all hoped, but it was an amazing season.  With rain causing the cancellation of the final race of the season for the Speedway Chevrolet Super Late Models the points and finishing order for the season are final.

Lang had an impressive season with 11 victories in 18 starts for a total of 933 series points. Naima not only won the track championship for Evergreen Speedway, he also won the state championship for the Whelen All-American Series and finished in the top 300 drivers for the national points standings. In his Wired X Energy sponsored car, Lang had a spectacular run through the middle part of the season winning 3 events in a row twice and 8 of 10 from May through July. Every week, Lang and his crew showed up at the track ready to race. The brightly painted metallic blue car always shiny and clean, even when in the previous weeks where damage was sustained only to return to the track ready for competition and photo opportunities. For a driver who is often soft spoken, Lang let his driving style do the talking. A fierce competitor, Naima always wants to win, driving for victory lane and nothing else.

In his 3rd season as a feature division driver, Jeff Knight, finished the year 2nd in points with an impressive display of tenacity. Coming back week after week from what some would call more than anyone’s share of bad luck. Knight persevered through to the end. With tire blow outs, car fires, bizarre crashes and mechanical gremlins, a lesser person may have given up, but not Jeff, a true champion among sportsman.

In just his sophomore season as a late model driver, Daniel Moore, proved that he was a true racecar driver. Starting out the season, Moore and his team improved week after week. By mid season, Daniel was running up front and coming ever so close to getting that first late model win. With four second place finishes, Moore will surely be a force in the 2010 season. He finished 3rd in the points standings just 12 points behind Jeff Knight.

Driving for diversity standout, Natalie Sather, finished 4th in the track points standings. In her first year as a late model driver, the former sprint car racer from North Dakota steadily improved week after week. But where she shined was on the “Big Track”. Natalie ran on a half mile dirt track before arriving at Evergreen Speedway and the speed and size of the 5/8’s mile oval suited her style.  One of her best finishes came on the large oval, a 2nd place, with a very talented pool of drivers in what turned out to be the last race of the season.

Rounding out the top five for the 2009 season in the Speedway Chevrolet Super Late Model Division is a driver who is admired by fans, drivers and crews alike. A true gentleman to the sport of auto racing, Tom Hughs. Hughs was on the verge of winning his first feature when a late caution caused the field to be tightened back up. Erasing what was to be an insurmountable lead, Lang and Hughs were lined up side by side. A violent crash with laps closing relegated Tom to finishing the race via a tow truck. Help from other drivers and crews and his crew chief, Mike Walker, Tom was back for the next race.

6th in points, Steve Ptacek
7th, James Mugge
8th, Chris Preston
9th, Tom Moriarty
10th, Darrin Stordahl

All drivers will be honored at the 2009 Evergreen Speedway awards and appreciation banquet on November 21st.

The first 100 fans through the gate will receive a prize, plus extra prize give-a-ways all evening long.
Also beer garden specials all night, Miller and Miller Lite and Mike’s Hard Lemonade just $3
The Pawn X-change Super figure 8’s will take to the most dangerous intersection in the country for the last time in 2009, the racing always exciting and the action is intense. With a 64 point lead John Carlson will win his 3rd straight championship. The battle is going to be for 2nd, where Ricky “The Kid” Deitz holds only a 6 point lead over Shane Sawin. What kind of tricks are up Shane’s sleeve to gain that 2nd spot. These two have battled back and forth the entire season and it may come down to the final lap.
Seth Funden is looking to win his 1st championship in the Stinger 8 division. With a couple of weeks off, the Stingers are itching to get back on the track. Even with the championship already decided, Seth is looking for a trophy and will race hard like he always does.
The Cub Scout Hornets will crown their first ever season points championship. Chris Williamson has a 21 point lead over Rick Palmer. Can Chris hold on to take the crown? After last week’s 100 lap race with the Duvall Diesel Bonus the winner took home a cool grand. The racing was fun and challenging running 50 laps in the rain and 50 laps in the dry. These drivers in the 4 cylinder class showed the crowd they can drive the road course well.

The tightest battle of all the divisions at the speedway is in the Les Schwab Tire Street Stocks. Just 10 points separate the top three. Frank Cowgill holds a very slim 6 point lead over Darrel Lutovsky, who sits just 4 points ahead of Lane Sundholm. This one will come down to the wire. The battle has been tight all year for the top 2 spots between Cowgill and Lutovsky. But with 4 wins in the last 5 starts Sundholm has battled back from early season woes. Three different engine builders have been credited by the top three drivers. Cowgill has given credit to Action Machine, Lutovsky to Engine’s by Freddy and Sundholm to Bill Hunt Racing engines. These three will surely be running their racing machines for all they are worth to the checkered flag. This is one that won’t want to be missed.

Grandstands open at 5:00pm for heat races.

Harriss Wins 2009 Foster Press Mini Stock Championshop

September 19, 2009 by marvmonty

For Immediate Release:

Kris Harriss is the Foster Press Whelen All American Series Mini Stock 2009 Season Champion. It was a wet night at Evergreen Speedway to start the evening. Coming into the night Harriss held a 19 point lead over Scott LaCross. After the heat races LaCross had cut the lead to 17 by winning his heat race and Harriss finished 3rd. During the 50 lap main event LaCross did all he could do by winning the 50 lap main event. Harriss ran a great race with a very wet track and finished in the 3rd spot. John Shukar, who was excited to run the 50 lap main event, finished in the 2nd spot. Mindy Harriss was elated to have her husband win the championship and her car winning the race.

Due to inclement weather the Speedway Chevrolet Super Late Model race had to be cancelled. Naima Lang, who had a lock on the championship was extremely disappointed that the race was cancelled, didn’t sit around in the pits but ran 50 laps in the Duvall Diesel 100 splitting driving duties with Lane Sundholm in the Conner Graber number 5 car.

The Cub Scout Hornets had a 100 lap main event split into two 50 lap segments. Duvall Diesel and Automotive sponsored this event and put up an extra $500 if any driver that finished in the top 10 the first segment was able to come from the back to take the win. 34 cars took the green flag, John Malloy and Steve Peters swapped the number one and two spots for most of the first segment. Mike Daher and John Zaretzke along with Zack Larson and Jaime Corbett also ran very strong the first segment. Starting from the very back of the big field on the winding road course, Peters, Malloy and Daher made quick work of the slower cars moving through the field in a hurry and getting most of the spots back on the first couple of laps. Daher  moved out to the front and had Malloy running about 5 seconds back. Peters, who was very strong for the entire first segment, started to fade back from the leaders and finished the race in the third spot. Lap after lap Daher held his lead all the way to the finish to take home the big check. In victory lane Daher did the racecar roof stomp climb the fence routine and was more that excited about the win.
