For Immediate Release:
Evergreen Speedway and Johnson Productions is happy to announce the return of Les Schwab Tires as an advertising partner for the 2010 season. Once again, Les Schwab will be represented by the speedway through logo/sign placement at the facility, through media campaigns on radio and television, work with related charities, and a special sponsorship of a Les Schwab Tires event for Mid-season championships. Look for more information and event discount coupons at Les Schwab locations in Snohomish County throughout the season.
“Les Schwab has long been a sponsor here at Evergreen. Their involvement with us continues to set the standard for these types of advertising relationships. For Immediate Release:
Saturday January 2nd at Evergreen Speedway…… In a word “WOW”
The Snow Ball 500 presented by Falk Development
What a terrific way to start 2010, with a tremendous car count and great weather, the pits were full of excited and happy racers. Free admission to the grandstands for the race fans resulted in a crowd of a few hundred people. Everyone in attendance knew it would be a great show.
The back gates opened at 1:00pm and saw cars and crews filing in almost right up until the racing started at 4:00pm. Pit space was limited with one car short of 100 racecars, trailers, etc.
First up for the day’s events was the Stinger 8 “150”. 17 of the always exciting 4 cylinder racers took the green flag. Within just a few laps, the action was heating up at the intersection. Many veteran drivers were in the field for the extremely long race. Super figure 8 champion Steve Peters and fellow super figure 8 driver Jake Repin along with stinger 8 champions Mike Middleton and 2009 champ Seth Funden. The wily old veteran, Ben Chandler, ran not only the 150 lap figure 8 race but also the 250 lap hornet road course race. (As of Tuesday, he was still a bit sore). In one of the hardest intersection crashes in recent memory at near the midpoint of the race resulted in an immediate red flag. Both cars of Bill Wade and Russ Stotler were destroyed. The drivers faring only slightly better. The “Mighty” Josh Young and JD Lewis brought out a pair of MR2’s with the same 22 number, that kept the announcers on their toes of who was who and where they were at in the field. Steve Peters and Seth Funden battled for nearly the entire race for the number one spot, with Nick Gunderson not far behind. While Peters led for many laps, it was Funden who led when the white flag flew. With the win on the line, and second place secured, Peters made a wild last lap attempt to pass Funden. The result was huge contact, driving the crowd and pits alike into a frenzy. It also resulted in a one lap penalty for Peters. Funden regained control of his car to take the checkered flag in the first position, with Peters finishing second. Nick Gunderson, Josh Young, and Ben Chandler rounded out the top 5.
Next up on the grid was the V8 “100” on the big 3/8’s mile oval. The first V8 enduro in a number of years to be ran at the speedway. 13 cars showed up to take the green flag in the first of what should be many of these big car Enduro races for 2010. Early race car trouble took the odds on favorite, Brian Cottrell, out of the race. Another Evergreen Speedway long time veteran, Doug Delfel, brought out his figure 8 car to run some laps on the oval. Adapting to the oval from his comfortable figure eight history, “The Grizz” showed his driving prowess by finishing the 100 lapper first. Sean Peters finished second, and Ray Bader, in his classic style racer, finished 3rd.
Onto the main event.. The “250” lap hornet road course.
A new track layout for the drivers, including the long 3/8’s mile straightaway, three tight slow turns and big sweeping corners kept the drivers on their game. 66 cars lined up to take the green flag on a course that used the 3/8’s mile oval the 1/5th mile back stretch and then a tight turn through the figure 8 track to make another sharp turn to cross the start finish line. Early on in the race it was clear that Late Model driver, Jason Fraser, and 2009 Super Late Model Champion, Naima Lang, came to race. These 2 drivers were quickly making their way through the traffic of lap cars almost from lap one. Fraser clearly showing he had the car to beat. Steve Peters, who also comes prepared for theses big races, was not far behind. Even though the track measured around a half of a mile, the large number of cars created traffic everywhere around the track, and drivers had to pick their spots to try and make passes.
The large sweeping turn into turn 4 of the 3/8’s mile oval, with cars headed towards turn 3, proved to be exceptionally challenging as a number of cars lost direction there. Cars were getting stuck in the mud if they tried to pass too low and by kicking water up onto the race surface, the preferred groove ended up very slick. The tight chicane headed through the infield back to the start finish line also was a challenge. Cars came down the back stretch at full speed, then had to downshift and brake to negotiate the tight corners. While both would finish the event, tire and car trouble took early first and second place of Fraser and Lang out of contention for the win. Steve Peters took over at point and led for many laps. It looked as though Steve had the car to beat at that point, but big contact with another car took him out contention as well. This put Chris Schlaht, who made the long trip from Portland for the race, into the lead, Sean Peters was right there in contention but couldn’t find enough to reel in the leader. At the finish it was Chris Schlaht in 1st, Sean Peters in 2nd, hornet race regular Jaime Corbett in 3rd, Brett Fjetzer in 4th and Billie Williams in 5th.
The “Snow Ball 500” was a great success and plans are already in the works for a similar event to occur sometime in February. Check the Evergreen Speedway website often for updates.
