Monroe, WA (April 26, 2010): On Saturday night April 24th Tom Moriarity of Monroe, WA kept his perfect season alive, winning the Super Late Model main for the second time in as many races at Evergreen Speedway in the NASCAR Whelan All American Series. Joselyn LaFleur of Monroe, WA won the NASCAR Stinger 8 main. The NASCAR Super Figure 8 main event win went to Jake Repin from Monroe, WA. Joe Kneeland of Bothell, WA won the NASCAR Whelan All American Series Feature Division main. Jim Puntenney from Monroe, WA won the B-main in the Hornet class.

Moriarity came all the way from the back of the pack to win his second main in the young 2010 season. Taking the lead from Daniel Moore (Snohomish, WA) on lap 19 of the time shortened 25-lap main on the speedway’s 3/8-mile paved oval. On the double file lap-19 restart, Moriarity started outside front row. By the time they were in turn-2 Moriarity had the lead and immediately pulled away from the rest of the group. Jeff Knight (Monroe, WA) finished 3rd with a banged up race car.

The Stinger 8 winner LaFleur led the entire 20-lap main. By being in the lead LaFleur was able to avoid the carnage that happened behind her as the field raced to the checkered flag. A major 5 car pileup at the X coming to the checkers changed the whole complexion of the finish, except for the leader. Lance O’Grain (Monroe, WA) survived to finish 2nd. Steve Peters (Monroe, WA) finished a close 3rd.

Repin took the lead of the 25-lap Super Figure 8 main on lap 14 from his 8th starting position. Once Repin took the lead he was never challenged as he cruised to the win. Last year’s champion of this division John Carlson (Snohomish, WA) settled for 2nd while early race leader Dale Larson (Everett) finished 3rd.

The rain moved in just as the Street Stock 25-lap main started. Kneeland was able to master the field and the wet track. Kneeland got the lead after a late race restart and slipped and slid his way to his first win in 2010. Second place went to Jim Foti (Edmonds, WA) and third went to Frank Cowgill (Shoreline, WA).

The Hornet 10-lap B-Main winner Puntenney waited until lap 7 to take the lead and garnered his first victory in 2010. Jim Tautfest (Stanwood, WA) finished 2nd and Jesse Schoneman (Everett) 3rd.

The Hornet A-Main was canceled due to curfew restrictions and will be made up at a later date.

Next Up at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA is the May 1 Cinco de Mayo Night at the Races. The exciting night of action will feature Mini-Van Soccer, 4-cylinder Demolition Derby, Renegade V-8’s, School Bus Races, Roll-Over Contest, Boat Races and a death defying ‘Flaming Piñata Car Jump’. All starting at 7pm.

Evergreen Speedway fan appreciation night

Renegade winner — Scott Guybel
Stinger 8’s winner — Seth Funden
Street Stock winner — Lane Sundholm
Super Figure 8’s winner — John Carlson
Mini Stocks winner — Scott LaCross

On fan appreciation night a wet, slick course made for some dramatic and exciting races.

In most cases the low-side of the track is the advantage but drivers found early that the high side of the track would provide the most traction on the wet pavement.

As was the case in the Mini Stocks main with the 07 car of Andrew Shukar leading the first 14 laps until a yellow flag on lap 15 provided Scott LaCross just the opportunity to make his move. The high-side of the track was working all night until Shukar got too high on turn three of lap 15 as LaCross took advantage of the opening on the low side and stole the lead spot, sending Shukar to fourth.

LaCross would hold the lead the next 11 laps of the race, taking the checkered flag.

“Obviously with the rain the way it is the high-side is where you want to be,” LaCross said afterwards.

The Street Stocks and Renegade mains would prove to be similar as the 33 car of Scott Guybel led all 15 laps keeping wide on the turns taking the trophy in the Renegade main. The number 11 car of Merlin Cook kept the same strategy in the Street Stocks main until lap 16 when Cook held the lead going into turn one, but lost traction and skidded into the grass along with three other cars.

Lane Sundholm in the 00 car would end up winning the race after starting in last place — holding off Darrel Lutovsky in the 53 car.

Sundholm pulled off the victory even through apparent car trouble, saying afterwards that he had “no clutch, and no tranny” while racing the whole track in third gear.

The wet track caused all sorts of problems for the 6 car of Steve Schoenfeldt in the first race of the year for the Super Figure 8 cars. Leading the first six laps, Schoenfeldt spun out on the first turn of lap seven allowing the 2009 Super Figure 8 champion John Carlson to take the lead.

Carlson’s experience proved to be advantageous the rest of the way as he led each of the next laps to come on his way to the victory podium.

“It was a good way to start the year off,” Carlson said. “The moisture makes it a tricky race but it makes the driver come out.”

All of the action led to an exhilarating final race — the 50 lap Stinger main. The 40 car of Seth Funden battled the entire way with the winner of last week’s Stinger main Steve Peters. What may have been some non-verbal communication between father and son Steve and Sean Peters, the 8 car of Sean Peters drove fearlessly through the middle of the figure 8 on lap 28, forcing Funden to swerve out of the way — giving Steve Peters the chance he needed to take the lead on the inside lane.

Peters would hold the lead the next eight laps until Funden found a gap to pass Peters on lap 37. Funden would keep Peters at bay the rest of the race on his way to a checkered flag.

“Everybody that I race against is so tough,” Funden said. “It’s a really hard class.”

Thank you to all who attended fan appreciation night at the Evergreen Speedway that saw countless tickets, speedway memorabilia, a ride in the pace car, and some V.I.P tickets to next week’s races given to some lucky fans. We couldn’t do this without all of our great, dedicated fans.

The number 10 car of Brian Cottrell took the checkered flag in the Street Stocks main after second place finisher Doug Davidson [14] took out his back right tire on the front stretch.

“I was real tight coming on turn four … Doug was giving me a little trouble with his front bumper,” Cottrell said after safely exiting his car and running to the victory podium, “but that’s racing.”

Cottrell took the lead during lap fifteen of the 30 lap race, taking the lead from Davidson who had briefly stole the lead from the number 54 car of Tim Wagner.

The Super Late Models was a great race with the number 12 car of Tom Moriarity coming up with the victory after leading the final 22 of the 40-lap main event.

Moriarity took over the lead after the number 70 car of Jeff Knight (second in the points standings coming in) held a considerable lead until a yellow flag on lap 18 allowed Moriarity to catch up and pass Knight on the first turn off the restart.

Moriarity passed Knight on the outside off the yellow flag restart, a move he says he favors off of restarts.

30-lap Super Late Models main: 1 – Tom Moriarity (12) – 40; 2 – Jeff Knight (70) – 40; 3 – Daniel Moore (16) – 40; 4 – Fred Hall (6) – 40; 5 – Michael Prudnick (26) – 40; 6 – Wade Bennett (15) – 39; 7 – Andy Sole (20) – 36; 8 – Travis Blackwood (2) – 20.

Peters took the checkered flag after passing his son [Sean Peters] who held the second position on lap-10 and eventually held off Lance O’Grain the final ten laps.

The thrilling day of races ended with the Mini Stocks main in an event that included five yellow flags and five lead changes, all done in just 20 laps.

After starting out in sixth place, the number 97 car of Nat Barber took home the trophy in a race that had to be cut short by ten laps thanks to a flurry of yellow flags.

Barber took the lead after Kris Harriss had some trouble with Scott LaCross on lap 15. Harris held the lead position for eight laps before LaCross’ aggressive move to try and take the lead put him towards the back of the field, finishing 12th.

“Honestly I had a third place car,” Barber said on the victory podium. “Those guys got into each other … everybody was going at it and giving their all.”

30-lap Mini Stocks main: 1 – Nat Barber (97); 2 – Kim Lang (33); 3 – Steve Green (10); 4 – Scott LaCross (20); 5 – Joe Hobbs (32); 6 – John Roberts (64); 7 – Dale Creager (21); 8 – Molly Helmuth (92); 9 – Travis Woodward (16); 10 – AJ Verdugo (0); 11 – Jeff Miller (30); 12 – Kris Harriss (12); 13 – Rod Helmuth (3); 14 – Jack McGeehan (54); 15 – Nick Parish (36); 16 – Andrew Schukar (07).
