Memorial Day Weekend Spectacular Recap

Monroe,WA-

It didn’t take long for the large crowd at the Super Speedway of the West to get involved in the special Sunday day of racing at Evergreen Speedway. The crowd welcomed home Lance Corporal Adam Regier home from the 29 Palms with a standing ovation on this Memorial Day weekend. Kara Hesse kept the crowd standing with a beautiful singing of the National Anthem.
Children where scratching there heads wondering why there where 4 buses standing upright in the center of the 1/5th mile track. The Crusher, Josh Beckel wanted to play a game of dominoes with them as he attempted a world record trying to knock all for of them over as he came flying down the front stretch. Beckel lodged his car into the top of the first bus, where it would remain as it knocked three of the buses over. The Crusher received a standing ovation as he was retrieved by a fork lift from his car!
Evergreens growing Hornet class put on a great show with two time Iraq vet “The Sarge” Bob Glenn taking home the B main in the Boot. Track officials decided to throw a curve ball for the A main having the large field run the boot in reverse. With lots of action going into the service road service road it came to a 4 car race for first. The crowd came to a rise as Cyril Greenawalt in this #95 Lightneen McQueen car made a great move to pull into first with 4 laps left. But it wasn’t enough as Ken Moi and his #81 Integra battled back with one lap to go to take home the checkered flag. Rounding out the top 3 was Troy Johnson in his black Honda.
Next up was the always fan favorite of the bus races. Mr Dizzy, Mike Buse had early problems with his “cow” bus and it came down to a two man race between Jay  VanBuskirk and The Hammerhead Lance O’grain. These two bus drivers waisted no time making sure those buses wouldn’t be picking up any children for school anytime soon, smashing into each other several times in the X. Jay VanBuskirk held off O’grain at the finish line to take home the hardware.
With boating season in full swing the v-8 extreme class wanted to show off there skills destroying some fishing boats. Fans where in charge of deciding the winner of this “race” and Anthony Jamie took home the trophy, his #43 made sure that several boats will not be returning to Lake Evergreen any time soon.
The racing night was caped of by a very strong car count for a demolition derby. The crowd stood the whole time as there was several strong hits ripping several bumpers off the cars. Randy Makowsky ended up being the last man standing and took home the $1500 first place check.
The night was not done as the lights went down for a fantastic fireworks display with a Memorial Day theme.
Next up at Evergreen Speedway is Judd & Black Seniors Tribute Night- featuring NASCAR Super Late Model Challenge Twin 50s (5/8), Stinger 8, V8 Xtremes, Legends ** All Seniors (62+) Free **

Winner of race one was Shane Harding and in race two it was Naima Lang. The Les Schwab Tires NASCAR Street Stock main, on the BIG track, winner was Joe Kneeland in the Ingrham High School students prepared car. Jon Roberts won the 3/8-mile Foster Press NASCAR Mini-Stock Main. The traveling Washington Midget Racing Association main was won by Evan Marguson. The other main was for the Stinger 8 division and the winner was Lance O’Grain. The large holiday crowd was treated to a pre-race concert by the Monroe High School Pep Band.

Race one of the twin mains on the BIG track was won in turn 3 on the final lap when Harding drove under second place finisher Daniel Moore. Harding kept the pressure on for the final 10-laps and was finally able to get by. Closing on the two at the end was third place finisher Naima Lang.

Race two was started with an invert of the first race finish. Jeff Knight was on the pole and looked like a sure winner but a restart on lap 15 Knight had problems and soon retired to the pits. Winner Lang got the lead by lap 20 and never had anyone close as he won by a half lap over Moore. Third went to Kelly Mann.

Kneeland was very strong in his win of the Street Stock main on the BIG track. Early leader Jim Foti settled for second and third went to Steve Ptacek.

The Mini-Stock main had 21 cars start. Winner Roberts had Scott LaCross alongside for the lead a few times but each time withstood the challenge. LaCross finished second ahead of Steve Green.

A bold move for the lead by Ben Petter for the lead of the WMRA main cost him as he spun and Marguson hung on for his third win in three races for series. Petter drove from the back to regain second at the finish and Mitch Hoffeses finished third.

Doubleheader Weekend at Evergreen Speedway

May 27, 2011 by sellsworth

At Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA, the annual Memorial Day Weekend Doubleheader is scheduled for the 27th and 28th of May. On Saturday it is ‘Whelen NASCAR Night at the Races’ featuring the ‘Big West Race #1’ for the Speedway Chevrolet NASCAR Whelen All American Series Super Late Models and the Open Motor Late Models for twin 50’s on the BIG Track the 5/8-mile paved oval. The Les Schwab Tires NASCAR Street Stocks will also be on the monster track for their main. In addition the 3/8-mile paved oval will be used by the Foster Press NASCAR Mini-Stocks for 50-laps, the Washington Midget Racing Association returns after a many years absence. The popular Stinger 8’s will be in action on the fast but tight figure eight track. Day two of the doubleheader is on Sunday for the big Extravaganza. The night will feature stunts by the Mr. Dizzy stunt team including a world record jump attempt, Boat Races, School Bus Races, Cub Scouts of America Hornet racing, big Demolition Derby all followed by a gigantic Fireworks Display. Both nights get going at 6pm with spectator gates opening at 4pm.

The first ever Big West race is scheduled for the 5/8-mile oval. This first of four race nights for the crate motor cars of the local super late model division and the open motored cars will race for the night’s purse money plus contingencies in twin 50-laps mains. There will be a monetary bonus if a driver can win both mains. After the scheduled races in the all new Big West series there will be an overall champion that will receive the super large trophy and champions money and contingencies. Some of the drivers expected are Pete and Shane Harding, Kelly Mann, Tyler Tanner, Mark Sundberg, Jim Risher, Jason Fraser, Travis Bennett, Naima Lang, Jeff Knight, Tom Moriarity, Tom Hughs, Daniel Moore, Travis Blackwood, Mike Holden, Tim Minister, Fred Hall, Michael Prudnick plus others.

The Street Stock division moves from their normal 3/8-mile oval out to the big track many say is almost too tough to tame. Current point leader for the 2011 championship, Lane Sundholm will be joined by Steve Ptacek and Brian Cottrell all locked into a tight battle for the season’s crown. The rest of the division racers are expected along with a few visitors.

Scott LaCross leads the chase for the 2011 championship in the Mini-Stock division. He along with close to 20-cars will battle on the 3/8-mile oval for 50-laps. Last week’s winner and defending division champion Kris Harriss will try to put together back to back wins.

The very fast opened wheeled midget race cars return to Evergreen Speedway after a long hiatus. They will race on the fast and challenging 3/8-mile. This traveling series has been a stepping stone for some of the northwest best racers. One that comes to mind is NASCAR racer Mike Bliss.

The night would not be complete without a figure eight race. The Stinger 8 division continues their chase to the title. Lance O’Grain is in the lead with Joselyn LaFleur and Sean Peters close behind. Another strong field of cars is expected.

On Sunday the Cub Scouts of America Hornet division is back in action along with Mr. Dizzy stunts, Boat Races, School Bus Races, Demo Derby and Fireworks. Another great point’s battle is underway in the tightly contested Hornet division. Newcomer to the division Cyril Greenawalt is leading the chase but is closely pursued by Richard Morgan Jr., Jamie Corbett and Troy Johnson.

Each night the racing begins at 6pm with front gates opening at 4pm. For tickets or more information call 360-805-6100. The speedway’s web page is located at www.evergreenspeedway.com.
