On Saturday September 24 at Evergreen Speedway on Foster Press Chamber Championship Night at the Races four more champions were added to the season total of seven. Last week Troy Johnson (Hornets), Lance O’Grain (Stinger 8’s) and Brian Gunderson (NASCAR Super Figure Eights) earned their individual division titles and this week Naima Lang (NASCAR Whelen All American Series Super Late Models and NASCAR State of Washington), Joe Kneeland (NASCAR Street Stocks), Scott LaCross (NASCAR Mini-Stocks) and Jerry Buell (NW Pro 4 Trucks) earned their titles as 2011 season champions. The 100-lap Speedway Chevrolet NASCAR Super Late Model main was won by Jeff Knight, the Les Schwab Tires NASCAR Street Stock main winner was Jim Foti, Foster Press NASCAR Mini-Stock main event winner was Scott LaCross and the traveling NW Pro 4 Truck series main was won by Terry Warren.

Lang enjoyed a season where he won 11 races and at one point he was 8 for 8. The last weeks of the season were not as good, but the big point lead held up for Lang to win his third Super Late Model division championship. The final race of the season was a 100-lap main on the 3/8-mile oval. Jeff Knight who had gone winless through the 2011 season was able to break the string with a strong win. Taking the lead from Daniel Moore, Knight was able to get that first win ending a frustrating year on a high. WSU student Moore who finished second in the race and in the championship points had his strongest season as a SLM driver. After his first time on the 3/8-mile oval JJ Hamilton finished third. Fred Hall had his best finish of the year in fourth. Lang finished tenth, laps down due to mechanical troubles.

It is a first for Street Stock division champion Joe Kneeland. Kneeland with the help from students at Ingraham High School won his first ever championship in this competitive division. The high school students work on the car during the week and on race nights. The divisions championship main event was won by Jim Foti, his second this season. Darrel Lutovsky finished second and Lane Sundholm finished third. Kneeland finished fourth.

Now a four time division champion, Mini-Stock champion Scott LaCross capped it off with a win of the night’s championship main. Winning championships in 2001, 02, 03 and now again in 2011 LaCross becomes the only four time champion. Bobby DeYoung finished the main in second with Molly Helmuth for the second race in a row in third.

The final championship race of the night was for the visiting NW Pro 4 Truck Series. The season’s championship was won by Jerry Buell, his first. The race was won by Terry Warren. Mike Nelson finished a distant second ahead of Ken Milligan. Buell finished fourth and also set a new track qualifying record of :18.920.

The triathlon was run by Molly Helmuth. The 16-year old raced in her first ever NASCAR Super Late Model division event, followed by racing with the Pro 4 Truck Series and in her familiar NASCAR Mini-Stock division. The high school student finished seventh in the 100-lap SLM race, after mechanical problems a tenth in the Pro 4 race and a podium third place in the Mini-Stock race on a very warm and muggy night.

Next up at Evergreen Speedway on October 1st is the rain or shine season finale featuring a Mr. Dizzy Finale Jump, a Truck Demo Derby, Large Car Demo Derby, Three Car Train Races, Extreme V-8’s, Hornet Invitational all capped off with a first ever Fireworks Competition. Three of the area’s best Pyrotechnic companies will compete to see who can put the best show on for the crowd. Each company will put on a display to see who is the best in the Northwest. The Judges for the competition will be the crowd. After the Three Firework Displays the crowd will decide who will be the winner! A Spectacular Grand Finale will end the evening! Be a part of the show at the Evergreen Speedway October 1st by getting your tickets on the web at www.evergreenspeedway.com, call 360-805-6100 or on race night at the ticket office. More Champions to be Crowned at Evergreen Speedway

On Saturday night September 24 at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington there will be four 2011 season titles handed out. The Foster Press presents Chamber Championship Night at the Races will feature championship main events for the Speedway Chevrolet NASCAR Whelen All American Series Super Late Models 100, the Les Schwab Tires NASCAR Street Stocks 50, the Foster Press NASCAR Mini-Stocks 50 and the Northwest Pro 4 Truck Series 50. All the championship mains will be run on the reconditioned 3/8-mile paved oval. In addition there will be area businesses showcasing their respective lines under the grandstands during the afternoon and evening. The championship racing begins at 6pm with front gates opening at 4pm and FanFest at 5pm.

Super Late Model division point leader Naima Lang will have his hands full with many of the area’s best drivers and new drivers to the division expected for the 100-lap championship main on the fast 3/8-mile oval. The track was reconditioned about two months ago and all the divisions that have raced on it since have broken their old track qualifying records including the SLM’s. Lang leads for the track championship and is in the lead for the coveted State of Washington NASCAR title. This will be Lang’s third championship after winning the 2008 & 09 season titles.

Molly Helmuth (16 years old) will make her debut as SLM driver on Saturday. Helmuth will also be racing in her NASCAR Mini-Stock (she had her best finish 3rd during the last race) and in her truck as part of the NW Pro 4 Truck Series. This young high school student has become a fan favorite and everyone is anxiously waiting to see her in a SLM for the first time. She has one of the area’s best crew chiefs helping her, Roger Habich a former SLM driver at Evergreen and on the Northwest Tour.

Recently on the 3/8-mile the SLM’s have held twin main events usually 50-laps each. The 100 lap main will be much different with the drivers and teams having to make the correct adjustments on the car to make sure the car handles well at the end. Two of the area’s top SLM racers that have mastered the 3/8-mile of late are two time winner Tom Hughs and winner of the last two in a row Daniel Moore will be challenged by the 100-lap distance. Another strong competitor is Monroe’s Rock Church Pastor Jeff Knight. The added distance may play into his favor.

Joe Kneeland the current point leader for the 2011 season championship of the Street Stock division is in line to win his first ever championship. Kneeland has a unique situation as there are students from Ingraham High School that work on the car. He is taking the Ingraham High School Pirates to their first car racing title. Of course the title is not quite in their grasp yet. There is still the possibility that second in points Steve Ptacek could win the championship if the Kneeland team falters and does not make the 50-lap main event and Ptacek was able to overcome the 88-point margin. Third in the points Brian Cottrell has been the hottest driver as of late with 3 wins in the last four. Cottrell may also have his new SLM with and run in that division’s 100-lap main.

The Mini-Stock division title will be decided after their 50-lap main. Scott LaCross who won the title in 2001, 02 & 03 is just one race night away from the championship and becoming the first in Mini-Stock history at the fabled Evergreen Speedway to win four championships. He will join Bill Zimmerman Jr. who won the Foreign Stock championships in 1975, 76, 77 & 80 as the only 4-cylinder four time champs. Kris Harris is second in points with the winner of the last race for this division Jon Roberts third. Molly Helmuth will have a chance to move into eighth in points with another solid podium finish.

Northwest Pro 4 Truck Series point leader for the 2011 championship in this traveling division is Jerry Buell. Buell has a 34-point edge over rookie Scott Waulters and 44-points up on, veteran Pro 4 Truck driver, Terry Warren. With points awarded for qualifying position, heat finish and main event finish the 44-point deficit could be easily overcome. Their main event on the 3/8-mile is scheduled for 50-laps. Two local drivers that are in the top ten are also in competition for the series’ Rookie of the Year. Aaron Greene is in the chase for the rookie title as is Molly Helmuth. Greene is 4th in overall points and Helmuth 9th. They are 1st and 3rd in rookie points.

The Foster Press presents Chamber Championship Night at the Races begins with spectator gates opening at 4pm followed by FanFest at 5pm with the championship racing starting at 6pm. For tickets go to the web at www.evergreenspeedway.com or call 360-805-6100.

What a battle to the finish in the NASCAR Super Figure 8 Division.  Going into the night of Twin 50 races there were 6 drivers in the points battle led by the Gunderson Family.  In the end, Brian Gunderson, father of Nick and Ryan, captured his first Championship.  Jake Repin the 2010 Champion drove two excellent races and moved into the runner up spot, followed by Nick Gunderson finishing third, brother Ryan fourth, Mike Middleton fifth and Quinton Borreson six.  This was the closest points race in the 45 year history of  Figure Eight Racing at Evergreen Speedway.  Next year see for yourself, why they call the Super Figure Eight track at Evergreen Speedway the most exciting and dangerous intersection on the planet!
In the Stinger 8 Division, season long points leader Lance O’Grain ran away with the top spot capturing the 2011 Championship.  The battle for the next 4 positions have been much closer all season.  Hard chargers Todd Stillwell and Joselyn LaFleur will join Lance as the second and third place podium finishers at the 2011 Awards Banquet. The Stinger Division have thrilled crowds all season long at Evergreen Speedway and Slamfest in Puyallup!
The 2011 Hornet Championship night became Troy Johnson night, as he not only won the main feature of the evening, as well as locking up the 2011 Championship in grand style. Troy had loads of competition this year, in the end holding off Cyril Greenwalt and 2010 Hornet Champion Jamie Corbett for the title. The trio, along with the entire class of Hornet drivers put on great shows the whole season!
