2013 Summer Showdown Just Days Away
The 2013 edition of the Evergreen Speedway Coors Light Summer Showdown presented by NAPA Auto Parts is drawing near and the list of Super Late Model Drivers entered grows daily. The $80,000.00 purse is bringing the best from the Western United States and Canada. With $12,000.00 to win, the 200 lap Summer Showdown makes it the biggest Super Late Model race on the West Coast. The list of drivers entered is laden with former and present champions for the June 27, 28 & 29 extravaganza. Add in the Canadian stars that have entered and it has become an international affair. The star studded field will be over 40 strong competing for one of the 33-car starting positions on the Northwest’s biggest track the BIG 5/8-mile paved oval. The full three days of activity has a total purse of $100,000.00.
There are three former NASCAR Northwest Tour Champions entered. They are Ron Eaton (Tacoma, WA), Gary Lewis(Snohomish, WA) and Pete Harding(Surrey, B. C., Canada). Harding won the first Summer Showdown at Evergreen Speedway. Lewis has also won ASA and ARCA championships.
Jonathan Gomez (Twin Falls, ID) winner of the 2010 Spears SRL Southwestern Tour Championship and NASCAR K&N Pro West Series racer started last year’s Summer Showdown on the outside of the front row after a second place qualification run.
Four Evergreen Speedway NASCAR Super Late Model Champions have entered. They are Tom Moriarity (Monroe, WA)(6 Time Champ), Naima Lang (Lynnwood, WA) (4 Time and present Champ), John Zaretzke (Monroe, WA) (3 Time Champ), John Bender (Snohomish, WA) (1 Time Champ). These Championships account for 14 of the last 17 championships. Gary Lewis also won an Evergreen Championship prior to heading out on the NASCAR Northwest Tour in 1992.
Ryan Wells (Hingham, MT) has won the last two Super late Model championships at Montana Raceway Park in Kalispell, Montana. This will be Wells’ first trip to the Northwest longest track, the 5/8-mile oval at Evergreen. Wells had a podium third place at this year’s Southern Idaho 200.
There is an international flavor that the biggest Super Late Model race in the history of Evergreen Speedway and the Northwest has taken with entries from drivers representing two provinces of Canada. Tom Berrow (Coquitlam, B.C., Canada) and Rob Angus (Langley B.C., Canada) including Pete Harding. Kelly Admiraal (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) has also entered. Admiraal is also running on this year’s NASCAR K&N Pro West Series. Each of these drivers has won championships in their respective portions of their country.
There are others entered that have won championships at their respective tracks such as: South Sound Speedway Champions Kelly Mann (Monroe, WA) and Shane Sawin (Clearview, WA). Eric Schmidt (Roseville, CA) and Rod Schultz Sr.(Kalama, WA) have also been winners at their respective tracks.
Throw in these top winners of many of the West Coasts biggest races, Jason Fraser (Evergreen Speedway track record holder)(Snohomish, WA), Ken Sleveland (Olympia, WA), Rod Schultz Jr.(Woodland, WA), Jon Hubbert (Chehalis, WA) and Jay Sauls (Puyallup, WA) makes this the strongest field ever assembled for a Super Late Model race in the history of Evergreen Speedway.
These are just some of the 40 plus drivers that are presently entered for the June 27,28 & 29 Coors Light Summer Showdown presented by NAPA Auto Parts.
The 2013 Summer Showdown opens on Thursday June 27 with Fan Fest and a practice for the Summer Showdown Super Late Models. The evening will consist of the practice from 5-8pm. All fans will be admitted free with Live Music, Food, Beer Garden and Autograph Session. For the Teams there will be a free Chili Feed. For the first time the drawing for Friday’s Qualifying Order will take place. Each team entered will have their driver or representative come on stage and draw a can of Coors Light that will have a number on the bottom which will be their respective qualifying position in Friday’s Portion of the three day event.
Friday June 28 will include the qualifying runs for the Summer Showdown Super Late Models which will determine their starting positions in the 25-lap qualifying heats later in the evening. Also the NASCAR Street Stocks and Mini-Stocks will each have a main event on the 5/8-mile. Those will be followed by the all important 25-lap qualifying races for the Summer Showdown.
Saturday June 29 starts off with the Last Chance Qualifier race for the Summer Showdown 200. Those cars that did not get into the Summer Showdown via the 25-lap qualifiers on Friday will have one last chance to make the 33-car starting field for the 200. If you make it into the Summer Showdown it is $1,000.00 for making the start. The traveling Pro 4 Alliance Series brings their 30 car contingent to the Summer Showdown for a main event on the BIG track. Then the $12,000.00 to win 200-lap Summer Showdown.
