A couple of Firsts on Saturday August 4
On Saturday night at the 2nd Annual Spirit 105.3 Faith & Family Night there were two first time winners and the warmest night of the racing season with temperatures in the 90’s. Chad Fitzpatrick (15-years old) won his first ever Interstate Batteries Hornet main event and Frank Cowgill won the Les Schwab Tires NASCAR Street Stock main his first this season. The Foster Press NASCAR Mini-Stock feature was won by Jon Roberts his fifth of the season. Jessica Gray won the feature for the Buzz Inn Steakhouse Stinger 8 division her second in 2012. There were 10 pastors for the ‘Faster Pastor’ races with each receiving a well-earned trophy.
Young Fitzpatrick won the ‘Hill Street Cleaners’ clean pass of the night when he made a pass for the lead on lap 21 of the 25 lap feature of the Hornet road course main. With the pass it became Fitzpatrick’s first ever Hornet main event win and lengthened his 10 point lead to 12 points for the 2012 championship. Jaime Corbett was the car Fitzpatrick passed in the final laps. Corbett finished second and dropped the two points in the title chase. Third went to Richard Morgan Jr. During the post-race interview on victory stage Fitzpatrick stated, “My mom said if I won tonight she would quit smoking, so I was going to win this race no matter what”.
Stinger 8 winner Gray made a pass on the very last lap of the 30-lap main. She passed second in points Josh Young who finished second and is now 4-points back for the 2012 division championship. Traffic at the X of the figure eight earlier in the main caused Gray to relinquish the lead to Young and on the last lap it was traffic that got Gray the lead back. Former division champion Lance O’Grain finished third in a borrowed car.
Cowgill was able to capitalize on a mechanical problem that sent the point leader Steve Ptacek to the pits with a damaged car. Cowgill took the lead on lap 14 after a restart due to the Ptacek incident. Never looking back Cowgill garnered his first win this season and also took over the point lead for the division title. With five races remaining on the schedule for the Street Stock division, Cowgill has a slim 7-point lead over Ptacek. Jim Foti finished second and is fourth in the standings just 24-points back of the leader Cowgill. Darrell Lutovsky had to weather a flat tire and came from the back of the field to finish third.
It was another win for Roberts in the Mini-Stock division making it five on the season. Roberts added a few points to his margin for the 2012 championship and leads by 41-points over Michael Fritz who finished second in the 30-lap main. Third went to Nat Barber.
