Figure Eight Nationals Return July 27
On Saturday July 27th at Evergreen Speedway the annual Emerald City Harley-Davidson of Lynnwood Figure Eight Nationals brings the best racers to the Northwest’s fastest figure eight track for the 150-lap, $3,000 to win extravaganza. The Figure Eight Nationals is one of the Northwest’s oldest and most revered events. In addition the Buzz Inn Steakhouse Stinger 8 Division will have their 4-cylinder cars on the fast figure eight. On the 3/8-mile oval three of Evergreen’s NASCAR divisions will be on hand with the Speedway Chevrolet NASCAR Whelen All American Series Super Late Models for a 75-lap feature plus the Les Schwab Tires NASCAR Street Stocks and Foster Press NASCAR Mini-Stocks will each have their respective mains. That is over 300-laps of main event racing starting at 6pm.
Many of the best ever Super /Stock Figure Eight drivers have won the Figure Nationals over the years. A full field of cars is expected with former winners mixed in with drivers that want to add their name to the prestigious winners list. The Figure Eight Nationals is a 150-lap event which means 300 times through the center called the X. Avoiding traffic at the X will be the key to getting the $3000 winner’s check. Top drivers expected include Ricky Dietz, Steve Cox, Chris Curtis, Steve Peters, Don Eslick, Quinton Borreson, Mike Steltz, Seth Funden, John Carlson, Lance O’Grain and many more. The winner of the annual 88-minutes of FEAR run earlier this season, Nick Gunderson will try to win his second major event in one year.
The points chase for the 2013 season championship in the Super Late Model Division is tight with the top three only separated by a total of 26-points. Current leader and 6-time champion Tom Moriarity will try to keep his lead over Daniel Moore who is only 14-points back in his attempt at a first championship. In third and only 26 points back of the leader, Doni Wanat is also in the running for a first division title. In fourth is young 16-year old Garrett Archer is only 18-points behind Wanat. Another large contingent including last race winner and 2-time champion Shane Harding are expected for this 75-lap feature.
Stinger 8 point leader Todd Stilwell has a comfortable lead for the championship in this division. With a lot of races remaining he does not have the luxury of cruising to the title. Two of the four female drivers in this division hold the second and third spots towards the championship. Jessica Gray and Nicole Pollard hold those spots.
Another good point battle is in the Street Stock division with leader Roger Drake holding court with a 23-point edge on Darrel Lutovsky. In third 2-points back of Lutovsky is Jason McQuinn. McQuinn had a motor blow in the last race and has put in new power plant for this week. In fourth is former champion Joe Kneeland 5-points behind McQuinn. This division has half the season to go.
Jon Roberts the defending Mini-Stock champion has the lead for 2013 title. With half the season remaining his 44-point spread is not a lock. In second is second year racer Devin Kessler last years Rookie of the Year in the Mini-Stocks. Third is being held by Travis Woodward 14-points back and in fourth is Chuck Richard just 3-points behind Woodward.
The very full night of racing gets its start at 6pm with spectator gates opening at 4pm. Evergreen Speedway is Washington State’s only NASCAR sanctioned track.
