July 28 A Race to Honor Rory Price’s Life
The ASA/NSRA winged sprint cars storm into Evergreen Speedway in Monroe Washington this Saturday night July 28 at 6pm for the Rory Price Memorial (RPM) Open Wheel Spectacular. Six years earlier the same speedway that claimed the life of former driver, friend, father, husband and son, has become the meeting ground to celebrate the extraordinary life of one of our own. Rory was known for many things, but within the racing community he is remembered for his sense of humor, his passion for the sport and his hell on wheels attitude when he climbed into the cockpit of a race car. Since his passing, family and friends have rallied together in an effort to carry on Rory’s love for open wheeled racing; due to their countless hours of work and generous donations The Rory Price Family Fund has raised thousands of dollars to ensure Rory’s daughter will have a secure future.
Fifteen sprint cars have turned in their pre-registration forms, but many more are expected to make the haul to Evergreen Speedway. Perhaps the two drivers with the closest bond to Rory Price are Lynnwood Washington’s Todd Coleman and Redmond Washington’s Robert Beck, both will drive with heavy hearts but a burning passion from within to be the first to cross the finish line. Other Washington drivers include Greg Ochs and local driver Randy Dubois. Making the trek south from Canada include drivers; Dave Salamandick, Chris Schmelzle, Ron Larson, Guy Barrett, Scott Aumen and Matt Mansell. Idaho’s Sierra Jackson has submitted her preregistration form as she looks to defend her 2011 title. She is sure to have her hands full with Johnny “The Jet” Giesler, who sits atop the current point standings and is consistently one of the fastest competitors. Three Oregon drivers, combining for nine ASA/NSRA championships between them, will make the tow. They include Matt Hein, 2008 and 2009 champion, Andy Alberding 2007 and 2010 champion and lastly, the one known as “Quick” Rick Brown, the only driver to ever win an unprecedented five ASA/NSRA championships.
With only three stops left on the tour, and a mere 80 points separating the top seven drivers, matched with one of the larger purses the ASA/NSRA races for, Saturday is sure to be a wheel to wheel gunslinger like shootout. Evergreen’s track promoter asked to schedule the sprints on the much smaller 3/8’s oval instead of the traditional 5/8’s that they have run in the past. Horsepower has always been a huge factor at Evergreen Speedway, but the smaller track will neutralize some of the horsepower and could keep cars bunched up throughout the main event. The all-time track record for the reconditioned 3/8-mile paved oval is expected to fall. Johnny Giesler is holding tight to an eleven point lead over Sierra Jackson. While Jackson looks ahead to Giesler she’ll also have to contend with Andy Alberding who sits one point behind her and twelve back from Giesler. All three drivers have separated themselves from the pack just a little, but anything can happen in three races and a driver can never let their guard down, especially with drivers, Matt Hein, Rick Brown and Scott Aumen sitting within striking distance. Hein has had his share of bad luck this year but looks to get back to his championship ways this weekend. All three drivers know what it takes to run up front, and all should be considered dangerous competitors this weekend.
A special thank you goes out to the RPM group and all the sponsors who have come together and sacrificed their time and made donations to make this race happen every year. To all the fans that fill the grand stands every year, thank you for your support of our group and for the Price family, your donations are more appreciated than you may ever know. None of us would be here without the loyalty of you fans. We all look forward to seeing you at the races Saturday.
Also appearing will be the Washington Midget Racing Association (current speed record holders on the 3/8), Vintage Modifieds and the fast and furious Super Figure Eights.
The Open Wheel Spectacular starts with back gates opening at 12pm, front gates at 4:30pm and racing at 6pm. From 5-6pm the fan fest will feature the RI3 band in a live concert and an autograph session. Don’t miss qualifying at 4pm as the ASA NSRA Winged Sprints try to set an all-time speed record on the 3/8-mile paved oval.
