Moore Wins Grocery Outlet Feature
Daniel Moore won the Whelen Night presented by Grocery Outlet Bargain Market 75-lap feature for the Speedway Chevrolet NASCAR Whelen All American Series Super Late Models at Evergreen Speedway on Saturday June 8. Also victorious on the BIG track the 5/8-mile was Jeff Jones in his FSCRA Super 4. There were three classes on the 3/8-mile with Parker Stephens winning the Columbia River Legends main. The Foster Press NASCAR Mini-Stock main was won by Jon Roberts and the West Coast Street Stock Series winner was Zack Beaman. Another great weather night with fantastic finishes keeping the large crowd on the edge of their seats.
Moore was second and over 14 seconds behind leader Garrett Archer with 5-laps to go in the 75-lap feature on the BIG Track for the Summer Showdown Warm-up in the Super Late Model Class. A flat right front tire for Archer brought out the yellow. The lead went to Moore as Archer, with sparks flying, limped to pit road for a tire change. On the ensuing double-file restart Moore was able to withstand the charge on the outside by second place finisher Tom Moriarity, going on to win his first main this season. Moore in the Grocery Outlet Bargain Market sponsored car won on his sponsors night at the races. Third place went to Jason Fraser who fought to keep Moore back in third for much of the race. Moore was able to get by, not long before the late caution that gave him the lead. Fourth went to Pete Harding and fifth went to Shane Sawin. Next up for the Super Late Models will be the Coors Light presented by NAPA Auto Parts Summer Showdown on June 27, 28 & 29. The biggest Super Late Model event on the West Coast with $12,000.00 to win the 200-lap race on the BIG Track the 5/8-mile. Over 40-cars are expected for the $80,0000.00 weekend spectacle.
Using the trip to Evergreen’s BIG Track as a warm-up for the Summer Showdown the FSCRA Super 4 group will be a step up on the Pro 4 Alliance Series cars for their portion of the June 29 race. Jones was quickest qualifier and took little time to get to the front in the 20-lap feature for these Late Model 4-cylinder cars. Second place went to Scott Graf and third was Scott Beaudoin.
A last-lap, last-turn pass for young Parker Stephens had the crowd on their feet. Winning by a few inches Stephens thanked his dad Dirk Stephens for all his help with the setup for Parker’s first time on Evergreen’s 3/8-mile oval in the 30-lap Columbia River Legends main. Stephens made the pass on veteran Duane Swanson who finished second. Third went to Randy Beddow. 20-cars made the trip and put on a great show.
Jon Roberts kept his winning ways intact with his fourth this season in the Mini-Stock division. Roberts had a bit of a struggle getting by early leader Mike Hessler but once the pass was made cruised to the victory. Hessler had to settle for third as second place finisher Gary Hanawalt got by, late in the 30-lap main.
The West Coast Street Stock Series once again brought a full complement of cars and put on a great show for the fans on the speedway’s 3/8-mile oval. Zack Beaman who started his career at Yakima Speedway was quickest in qualifying and capped his night with a solid win. Dad, Chet Beaman, was beaming as Zack received the winner’s trophy. Second place went Andy Stibel and Kim Winnerberg third, both from the Wenatchee area where they have raced at Wenatchee Valley’s Super Oval. Local Street Stock racer Joe Kneeland finished fourth and a former Evergreen track champion and series regular Dave Lund finished fifth.
Up Next at Evergreen Speedway for circle track racing is the Season’s and the West Coast’s biggest Super Late Model event the Coors Light Summer Showdown presented by NAPA Auto Parts on June 27, 28 & 29. Over 40 Super Late Models will vie for one of the 33 starting positions in the 200-lap Summer Showdown on the Northwest largest track the BIG 5/8-mile paved oval. The $12,000.00 to win and $80,000.00 weekend purse is the largest in the history of SLM racing in the Northwest. June 27 is Fan Fest night which is free for the fans. The night will have a practice session for the entries in the Summer Showdown. There will also be live music, food, vendors and autograph opportunities for the fans. The crews will be treated to a free Chili feed courtesy of High Road Promotions. In addition, for the first time the drivers come on stage and draw for their qualifying position on Friday night. Friday June 28, the Super Late Models will qualify via the time clock for their starting positions in the 25-lap Qualifying Races later that night. Also the Les Schwab Tires NASCAR Street Stocks and Foster Press NASCAR Mini-Stocks will have main events on the BIG Track the 5/8-mile. Saturday June 29 starts off with the Last Chance Qualifying Main with the top cars filling out the 33-car starting grid for the 200-lap Summer Showdown. In addition the traveling Pro 4 Alliance Series will have their 30 plus cars on the BIG Track for their respective main event. Evergreen Speedway has reserved 42 RV/Camping spaces on site for the weekend at a discounted rate of 2-nights for the price of 1-night.
