Sauls Captures Win & $12k at Summer Showdown
Jay Sauls of Puyallup, WA won the second annual Coors Light Summer Showdown 200 presented by NAPA Auto Parts at Evergreen Speedway. 31-cars started the 200-lap race for Super Late Models on the BIG 5/8-mile paved oval with drivers from Washington, California, Idaho and Montana plus drivers representing two provinces of Canada. Sauls received the $12,000.00 winners portion of the $80,000.00 purse.
Sauls made it interesting by running a much higher groove than anyone else during the second half of the 200-laps on the BIG 5/8-mile oval. Once in the lead Sauls used the outside starting position on all ensuing restarts. Things were going well until with 9-laps to go a yellow flag forced a restart and this time Sauls did not get up to speed quickly and fell back to fourth. Fighting his way back to second when another yellow came out. Eric Schmidt of Roseville, CA was the leader and had the option to go high or low on the green-white-checker restart. Schmidt chose low to everyone’s surprise, giving the outside to Sauls on the double file restart. Sauls used the upper groove to his advantage and took the lead back, exiting off turn four as the white flag flew. Schmidt finished second with Daniel Moore of Spokane, WA a very close third. Fourth went to young 15-year old Garrett Archer from Kent, WA and fifth was Ryan Wells of Hingham, MT.
An interesting side note is that an open motor car won with a McGunegill motor second, a GM crate third and fourth and open motor fifth. A testament that the rules for the Summer Showdown are very close letting all types of super late model cars run the annual super big payday event.
The earlier main for the traveling Northwest Pro 4 Alliance Series had a wild finish with Rick Thompson of Prosser, WA just beating young 15-year old Cody Walker of Yakima, WA. As the checkers flew the two got tangled in turn one and the mayhem began with many other cars coming to the checkers involved. The 40-lap event with 25-cars starting was very entertaining and a great prelude to the Summer Showdown 200. Bud Rumsey from Prosser, WA was third with Jeff Jones of Tacoma, WA fourth and Eddie Secord of Oak Hills, CA fifth.
Up next at the ‘Northwest Center of Racing’ Evergreen Speedway is the annual July 4th Birthday Bash presented by Republic Services featuring a Large Car Demolition Derby, Emerald City Harley Davidson Super/Stock Figure Eights, Buzz Inn Steakhouse Stinger 8’s, Interstate Batteries Hornets, V-8 Extremes, WMRA/USAC Midgets and the county’s largest Fireworks Display.
