Super Late Model ‘Night of Champions’ May 4th
At Evergreen Speedway on Saturday, May 4 it is Genie Industries Military Appreciation Night. All Active/Reserve Military and their immediate family will be admitted FREE. The Speedway Chevrolet NASCAR Whelen All American Series Super Late Models will make their season debut on the 3/8-mile paved oval. In addition the Emerald City Harley-Davidson NASCAR Super/Stock Figure Eights, Buzz Inn Steakhouse NASCAR Stinger 8’s and the Interstate Batteries NASCAR Hornets will be in action. Racing starts at 6pm and front gates open at 4pm. With the warmest temperatures of the year predicted, a large turnout of cars and fans are expected.
The 2013 season kicks off for the Super Late Model Division with over twenty cars confirmed. It is turning into a ‘Night of Champions’ with defending champion Naima Lang back to contend for a fifth title. Other past champions running are: Tom Moriarity, John Bender, Shane Harding and potentially John Zaretzke answering for the past 15 years of championship crowns.
Others expected to vie for the season title are Andy Sole, Doni Wanat, Jeff Knight, Daniel Moore, Doug Davidson, Shane Sawin and last season’s Rookie-of-the-Year Molly Helmuth.
In honor of our nation’s military Jeff Knight will be running the National Guard Logo on his car, Scott LaCross (who is back after a late model hiatus. In the interim he won the 2011 Mini-Stock Championship) will run the Army logo, Tom Moriarity the Navy, John Boyatt the Air Force, John Bender the Coast Guard and Doni Wanat the Marines.
Besides LaCross’ the return to SLM racing Marty Ferguson will be back after a long absence. Throw in Rookie-of-the-Year contenders Garrett Archer and Frank Cowgill (2012 Street Stock Champion),the season looks to be extremely strong for the Super Late Model Division.
Super Figure Eights are back after two weeks off. Steve Peters, Seth Funden, Don Eslick, Ryan Gunderson are among the many that are in the running for the championship. Last season’s champ Jake Repin is sitting out the season and gave his ride to former Stinger 8 Champion, Lance O’Grain. This division is always extremely competitive and keeps the fans on the edge of their seats.
The Stinger 8 Division has four females competing on a regular basis and all four finished the 2012 season in the top ten in points. They are Nicole Pollard, Jessica Gray, Melissa Repin and Joselyn LaFleur. Current point leader for the 2013 championship is Todd Stilwell with Matt Somerville and Bryant Carlson following close behind. These four-cylinder cars keep the world’s most dangerous intersection, the X of the figure eight, a busy place.
Hornet Division point leader Jaime Corbett (2010 Champion) has yet to win in the early going of the 2013 season. On the podium in 2 of the first 3 races this season, Corbett is anxious to get back on the road course. Hornets this season, who traditionally run on the road course, have had two of their races this season on the 3/8-mile oval. Cyril Greenawalt and Scott Hunt hold the next two positions respectively on the points list. Over 40 cars are expected and with the great weather even more could show.
